The location of the garage allows the views and circulation of the
garden to be organised. There is a large access and parking area for vehicles
just in front of the main entrance to the house and another more protected area
between the house and the garage-gymnasium. This is an intimate area that
connects the main leisure areas of the garden, such as the gymnasium,
children’s play area, chill-out pergola and outdoor dining area. In addition, a
sheet of water-mirror of the sky was installed separating the area closest to
the house from the entrance and parking area for vehicles, thus creating a
physical and visual barrier in an attempt to preserve the natural character of
the garden.
The outdoor dining room is a kind of glass and
wood greenhouse which serves both as a place to grow beautiful tropical plants
and as a fully equipped dining room with barbecue, kitchen and toilet.
On the north-facing side, between the house and
the existing wall, the character of the courtyard is reinforced by creating a
stone space where an old stone oven, a washing place and a fountain were
installed. A large fig tree was preserved in this area and a Canary Island palm
tree growing on the other façade of the house was transplanted.
The search for a functional, low-maintenance
garden that would provide colour and texture throughout the year led us to opt
for a plantation rich in gramineous and annual plants that would provide a
wealth of colour and texture throughout the year, with great seasonal
variability. A spring full of flowering colours and autumn with yellow and red
tones provided by the existence of gramineous maples or liquidambars.
In the shaded area with a northern exposure, in
the space between the house and the run, large-leaved species with different
textures and colours were planted, such as Hydrangeas, Hostas, Agaphanthus,
etc., as well as different types of climbers that live on the existing large
stone walls.
Shortly after the plantations were planted, the first
insects arrived in spring and attracted the first insects, which in turn
attracted the birds and transformed the old Mourelos estate into a wild garden
where the family can live together in nature.
The garden is located in Mourelos, very close to the town of Silleda, in the province of Pontevedra. It is a restoration project of an old rural house in a state of abandonment, which was restored in parallel to the development of the landscaping project.
The main conditioning factor in the design was the need to introduce a series of new facilities in the garden that allowed the family to have uses that the architecture of the old house did not permit. A garage, a gymnasium, a covered outdoor dining area and multiple water features were built.
